How to Choose a Quality CBD Product

7 Mistakes Most People Make

A registered nurse's guide to buying CBD safely — what to look for, what to avoid, and how to spot quality before you spend your money.

A dropper bottle, a jar of gummies, and capsules on a green background — choosing CBD products

Most people don't struggle because CBD doesn't work.

They struggle because they unknowingly buy poor-quality products, take unrealistic advice from social media, or don't know what to look for.

After more than 30 years as a registered nurse — and after becoming certified in cannabis education — I've learned that choosing a quality CBD product is often more important than simply choosing a popular brand.

Before you spend your money, here are seven mistakes I see people make most often.

Mistake #1: Buying based on marketing instead of evidence

Miracle claims, "works for everything," and unrealistic promises are red flags — not reasons to buy. Evidence-informed choices start with skepticism toward hype.

Mistake #2: Never checking for third-party lab testing

A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is a lab report from an independent facility that confirms what's actually in the product — cannabinoid levels, contaminants, pesticides, and heavy metals. If a company won't share their COA, that's a dealbreaker.

Mistake #3: Assuming all CBD products are the same

Isolate contains only CBD. Broad spectrum includes multiple cannabinoids without THC. Full spectrum contains all cannabinoids including trace THC. Each type works differently depending on your needs and sensitivity.

Mistake #4: Ignoring how much CBD is actually in the bottle

A bigger bottle doesn't mean more CBD. Always check the total milligrams of CBD — not just the bottle size. A 30mL bottle with 250mg is very different from one with 1500mg. Learn to read labels and calculate per-serving amounts.

Mistake #5: Expecting results overnight

"Start low, go slow." CBD works with your endocannabinoid system over time. Most people need at least 2-4 weeks of consistent use before noticing meaningful changes. Patience and tracking are essential — not bigger doses.

Mistake #6: Choosing the wrong delivery method

Oil (sublingual) offers faster absorption. Capsules provide consistent dosing. Topicals target localized pain. Gummies are convenient but slower to take effect. The right method depends on what you're addressing and how quickly you need relief.

Mistake #7: Buying before knowing what you're trying to improve

Sleep? Pain? Inflammation? Blood sugar? Anxiety?

Your goals determine your product selection. A product that works beautifully for sleep may not be the right choice for daytime anxiety. Start with clarity about what you want to improve — then choose accordingly.

The Cannabis Nurse's

5-Point CBD Quality Check

Before buying any CBD product, ask:

  • Third-party tested?
  • Clearly labeled CBD amount?
  • Hemp source identified?
  • Appropriate spectrum (isolate, broad, or full)?
  • Does this product actually match my health goal?

Buying CBD shouldn't feel confusing

The goal isn't finding the most expensive product or the one with the biggest marketing budget. The goal is finding a product that's safe, transparent, and appropriate for your individual needs.

When you understand what to look for, you're much more likely to make informed decisions and avoid wasting money on products that don't meet basic quality standards.

If you're wondering where to actually start, these are the brands I use and trust — including third-party tested options with the COAs I talk about above.
